CHILLY CLIMATE

How UW Women Report the Subtle and Overt Effects of Sexism in Their Lives

¨    Seeing few female role models in positions of power and authority.

¨    Not being listened to or heard.

¨  Being the object of derogatory comments or “complimentary” remarks that are actually insults (e.g., complimenting a woman as if it’s surprising that she has a particular skill).

¨    Being bullied rather than made a partner in negotiation.

¨    Not receiving credit for ideas.

¨    Being called by one’s first name when men are addressed by last names or by titles.

¨    Feeling undervalued, tokenized, outside the “right language” of the insider’s group.

¨    Feeling excluded from networking opportunities, such as golf outings.

¨    Feeling isolated.*
