| Resolutions on Faculty Status | ||
| The Faculty Senate Executive Committee recommends that adoption of the following two resolutions relative to the issue of faculty status for teaching academic staff. The first resolution is advisory. The second resolution, assuming the concurrence of the chancellor, would be binding. | ||
| Resolution #1 | ||
| Whereas, teaching academic staff within a department may be granted "faculty status" at the discretion of the department and chancellor for the purpose of providing such staff with a voice in departmental governance, and | ||
| And Whereas, the faculty of UW-Superior wish to encourage the participation of academic staff in departmental governance, where appropriate | ||
| Therefore, Be It Resolved that the Faculty Senate of UW-Superior recommends that teaching academic staff who hold at least a 50% appointment on an ongoing basis, and who desire faculty status, be granted "faculty status." | ||
| Be It Further Resolved that nothing in the resolution shall be construed to interfere with the authority of departments and the chancellor to grant or withhold faculty status. | ||
| Resolution #2 | ||
| Whereas, some doubts exist as to the rights that follow from the granting of faculty status | ||
| And Whereas, the UW-Superior unclassified staff handbook states that faculty status "means a right to participate in faculty governance in accordance with the rules of the department. Faculty status does not confer rank or tenure, or convert an academic staff appointment into a faculty appointment." | ||
| And Whereas, campus and system rules explicitly limit certain decisions to "faculty peers." | ||
| Therefore, Be It Resolved that a teaching academic staff member who is granted faculty status shall have the right to participate in all departmental decisions as if he or she were a faculty member, with the exception of the following items | ||
| Appointment of search committees | ||
| Determination of criteria and procedures for faculty evaluation | ||
| Vote on faculty retention, tenure, promotion, and salary review | ||
