Minutes from April 4, 2006. Sloboda/Toivola moved to approve minutes. They were unanimously approved.
1. Students serving on committees - Carroll summarized the history/timeline Barb Erickson sent on students serving on the four committees of concern (Credits, Academic Reinstatement, Financial Aid Reinstatement, Housing Appeals). Discussion ensued. Toivola asked if we have a legal opinion on the sufficiency of student understanding and following FERPA guidelines. We could pursue a legal opinion. Carroll believes we should be treating students like adults, and he is in favor of students participating as voting members. Einerson echoed this perspective. Toivola expressed concerns with students serving on Credits Committee, due to the decisions they ponder. Sloboda agreed with her stance, pointing out that academic decisions are made regarding student credits, and this is a faculty decision. Discussion continued about voting rights of student members. Could students outnumber faculty votes? Sloboda will investigate other UW campusÕ practices, and Executive will discuss again in early Fall 2006.
2. Budget Council Election - We have to create a new council, Budgetary Review Council (BRC). How can we approach staggered terms? We might offer choices of 3- year terms, 2-yr, and 1-yr. Carroll suggested we construct the ballot so that we ask voters to choose two for 3-year terms, two for 2-year terms, and one for a 1-year term. Toivola/Sloboda moved to approve this method of staggering terms. Unanimously approved. Secretary will prepare separate ballots for BRC, PRPC, and Personnel Council.
3. PBRC
review of Counseling Professions Department -
We refer this to the department for a response to the review. The Counseling Professions Department
will have until October 31 to submit their response.
4. PBRC acknowledgements of departmental responses - Carroll reminded the group of SchrenkerÕs idea to put together the original review document, PBRC response to the review, and the departmental response to the response. We need to have these in one packet for each department, and all are archived in JDH Library. Carroll asked about the very slight differences in the responses. Discussion ensued.
5. Toivola asked if there was any word from the Provost on conducting a salary study. Carroll has heard nothing.
Meeting adjourned at 3:12 pm.
Respectfully submitted this 27thday of April, 2006.
Martha J. Einerson, Faculty Secretary
