GEOL 170 Earth Science (Summer 2003) Course description: Earth Science is a broad subject and knowledge about our planet and how it functions is an important aspect to our survival and well being. The course will cover the various types of rocks and minerals. The rock cycle and the geologic process involved in the formation of each rock group. Learn about the weathering processes and the soil. Explain the water resources, water cycle, precipitation, surface water, groundwater, and glaciers. Discuss the earthquakes and describe their cause. Learn about continental drift hypothesis and plate tectonic. Study the volcano and the major features produced by volcanic activities. Learn about mountains how they form and the types of folds and faults. Learn about history of geology, uniformitarianism relative and radioactivity dating, correlation of rock layers, fossils and geologic time scale. Learn about the ocean, ocean water and life and the dynamic ocean. Learn about the weather pattern, climate, atmosphere composition, structure, temperature, moisture, clouds and precipitation. Learn about earth’s place in the universe.
